- 61% of adults in the US are overweight or obese
- Excess weight has also led to an increase in Type II diabetes. 17 million people now have diabetes
- Less than 1/3 of adults engage in the recommended amounts of physical activity.
- 40% of adults in the United States do not participate in any leisure time physical activity.
- Overweight and obesity are associated with heart disease, certain types of cancer, type 2 diabetes, stroke, arthritis, breathing problems, and psychological disorders, such as depression.

- The number of overweight children in the US has tripled over the past two decades.
- Type 2 diabetes, previously considered an adult disease, has increased dramatically in children and adolescents.
- Overweight adolescents have a 70% chance of becoming overweight or Obese as adults. This increases to 80% if one or more of parent is overweight or obese.
- Risk factors for heart disease occur with increased frequency in overweight children compared to children of healthy weight.
- The most immediate consequence of overweight as perceived by children themselves is social discrimination. This is associated with poor self-esteem and depression.
Total health care costs on obesity was 75 billion dollars in 2003.

- Severely overweight persons had a 24 percent higher rate of outpatient visits; moderately overweight respondents had a 17 percent higher rate.
- Annual hospital days were 74 percent higher among the severely overweight and 34 percent higher among the moderately overweight.
- There was a significant association between BMI and each category of outpatient costs, with the exception of surgery and radiology services.
- Pharmacy costs were 78 percent higher for the severely overweight and 60 percent higher for the moderately overweight.

- The study found that obese men spent an average of $80.31 per month on drugs, overweight men spent an average of $39.27 per month, and normal-weight men spent an average of $22.84 per month. The amount spent by obese men was 3.5 times that of normal-weight men.
