February 5, 2009 Spreading Aloha, with Standup paddle boarding
Everactive is introducing standup paddle boarding to the Boston area this summer! It's a super fun sport, a phenomenal workout, and best of all, anyone can do it!
PORTSMOUTH, NH — Fitness specialist and surfing enthusiast, John Furey while on a trip with his marathon training team in Hawaii in 2005 saw stand up paddling for the first time and he was blown away. As soon as he got back home to Massachusetts he took his old windsurfer and a kayak paddle and started Standup paddling, or what he now likes to call Maui paddling!
In 2007 he mentioned to Peter Sleight founder of Everactive, a health and fitness coaching company in New England, that they should start to offer Standup paddle boarding lessons and fitness classes on the boards. Peter also a surfing enthusiast was on board immediately, no pun intended. "This is a one of a kind sport and one heck of a workout," says John, "people are going to really love this workout, in my 20 plus years as a fitness trainer this is going to take the cake. Just a small piece of cake though," he said with a smile.
Stand up paddle surfing stems back to ancient Polynesian culture. It requires some balance, but it's not all about catching waves. It can be done on totally flat water and since you are standing up, you are able to get a much better view of what is going on in and out of the water. In the 1940 and 50's long board surf instructors actually used this technique to keep an eye on their entire group of surfers in the lineup. In early 2000 when professional big wave surfer Laird Hamilton and a few other surfers started stand up paddling again it sparked a tsunami effect on the sport of stand up paddle surfing. Since then a new surf culture has taken over the beaches in Hawaii, California and now it's spreading rapidly all over the world.
Since you need to balance on a surfboard, stand up paddle surfing works every muscle in your body. Not only are you working your legs and arms but you're also working your core. You'll improve your cardiovascular fitness and burn a ton of calories. Some people are saying that it is like "yoga on water". Now triathletes are using it as a cross training exercise, pilates and yoga enthusiasts are attracted to this new outdoor core workout, families are enjoying a new hobby, and even business's see this a great way to take their team of employees on a business break.
They have partnered with a standup paddle board company so boards and paddles will be provided. They will be launching there new program in June 2009 on the South Shore and also in the Metro West region of Boston. They will be offering lessons, fitness classes and corporate outings all summer long! "Both John and I truly believe that standup paddle boarding will become a huge sport even in New England where our season is short. The advantage we have is that when the weather does get nice folks will want to get out and play. Come join us and remember to stay EVERACTIVE!" ALOHA
